Cloud migration strategies, in particular multi-cloud, have become major buzzwords in network expansion discussions. What we’re seeing is that organizations are moving towards a multi-cloud hybrid approach using public and private clouds to set up a customized solution to fit their business needs. I recently hosted a webinar with two Spectrum Enterprise experts: Paul Bentivegna, our senior manager of solution architecture and strategy, and Russell Dennis, our director of managed services and security solutions, exploring the benefits of a multi-cloud approach to business.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the second webinar in the Practical Applications for a Modern Network series.

Looking at multi-cloud deployment benefits

  • The cloud enables organizations to employ their compute resources in a place where they don't have to worry about space, power, refueling generators, cleaning schedules and other maintenance issues.
  • Outsourcing tasks like compute, backup, and application hosting to a cloud frees up employees to focus on actually running the core business.
  • Having multiple cloud providers allows for an organization to utilize a specific cloud provider based on their differences in pricing, performance, security, compliance requirements and geographic reach.

What’s required for organizations before leveraging a multi-cloud environment?

  • Organizations need to start a cloud migration with the desired end state in mind, not only from a technology standpoint but also from a business standpoint. Organizations need to understand the business need of their applications, and do an in-depth application inventory, so that they can understand and optimize connection points, and know where and why the data will be moving, before migrating to the cloud.
  • As part of the planning of what sort of data/applications will move to which cloud, organizations must work with technology partners to determine these factors: What's the value of the application? What's the value of the data? Are there ways to migrate and encapsulate the data into other applications and other business processes?
