3 security best practices for business continuity
No question, the pandemic has stress-tested every business continuity plan ever created — especially security strategies. Hackers are finding more opportunities to attack networks while businesses are consumed with changing their operating models and supporting a distributed workforce.
Having the right security strategy and solutions in place to prevent crippling data breaches and cyberattacks is a critical part of ensuring your company is ready for the next unforeseen challenge. Here are some basic security best practices to consider as part of your business continuity plan:
- Use multi-layer protection: Taking a layered approach to security typically involves having protection measures at the system, network, application and device levels, which makes it much harder for attackers to wreak havoc. It ensures every security measure has a backup to counter any gaps. At a minimum, security measures should include perimeter protection such as an on-premises or cloud-based firewall, and end-point security for all network devices.
- Secure your network with VPNs: It’s important to provide remote workers with network access using virtual private networks (VPNs), which secure data using an encrypted connection over the internet. Also important is ensuring secure connectivity between office locations, which can be accomplished using either a VPN or a software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN).
- Deploy DDoS protection: Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are on the rise, and hit a crescendo this past summer, bringing many businesses to a complete standstill. A service that proactively protects against DDoS attacks is critical for filtering out malicious internet traffic and keeping network resources online.
