As Director, Data Product Development at Spectrum Enterprise, I design modern network solutions that address our clients’ current challenges — and help them be ready for future ones.

What IT challenges do clients tell us they struggle with the most? Exactly what is a modern network, and which modern network solutions can help? Here are the answers.

What are the most pressing IT challenges companies are facing today?

Companies are facing heightened security risks and need to secure numerous endpoints against rising threats, which include DDoS attacks. And many of them don’t have the IT resources to manage these threats — or deal with general network maintenance and management, for that matter.

Also, many companies that have limited IT resources are often unsure about what technologies they need. They might know they need internet service to provide connectivity, for example, but not know specifically which type of internet service would provide the always-on, high-bandwidth connectivity they might require.

Because of these security and connectivity challenges, more businesses are looking for technology partners who will help them identify modern network solutions that are best for their unique needs, and even manage those solutions for them so their IT teams can focus on other priorities. We’ve definitely seen an uptick in interest for our managed solutions and services, specifically our Managed Network Edge solution, Managed Security Service and DDoS Protection service.

What is a modern network, and why can it help solve not only current challenges but also future ones?

A modern network is a network that provides businesses with the flexibility to meet their current connectivity needs, as well as the scalability to support new applications and technologies they might need in the future to grow their businesses or support unexpected priorities. For example, with a modern network, companies can rapidly turn up connectivity to a new remote location in response to a situation like COVID-19, or easily add capacity to support IoT and other technologies.

In addition, more and more businesses are using cloud-based apps to process orders, manage contact databases and other critical functions, and modern networks provide the scalable bandwidth companies needed to pump data from those applications to the cloud and bring it back securely. They also provide the ability to monitor performance at the application level so IT teams can easily see how to best optimize their networks.

What solutions help clients modernize their networks and tackle their challenges?

We have a relatively new product called Managed Network Edge, which is delivered over the Cisco Meraki platform. It’s basically an all-in-one network solution that enables clients to use our internet connectivity, or bring their own. It has built-in security, and companies can also layer on various components like Managed WiFi, managed switches or smart cameras as their needs evolve. We design the entire solution to meet each client’s needs, and if they’re short on IT resources, we can manage the entire solution for them. On the other side of the coin, if they have sufficient IT resources and want to maintain some control, we can co-manage the solution with them.

Managed Network Edge simplifies network management because it provides all needed network services. Clients can have one solution, one partner and one invoice for everything.
